How to Test a Car Battery with a Multimeter

First, you’ll need to set your multimeter to the voltage setting so you can check for a voltage drop. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  1. Disable the ignition system by temporarily disconnecting the ignition coil or removing the fuel pump fuse. This will ensure the engine won’t start.
  2. Touch the red (positive) meter probe to the red (positive) battery terminal.
  3. Touch the black (negative) meter probe to the black (negative) battery terminal.
  4. Have someone crank the engine. If the meter reads over 0.5 volts, you should clean the battery and check the condition of the posts and terminals.

How to Test a Car Battery with a Voltmeter

Before starting this process, set your voltmeter to 20 DC volts. This will help you get an accurate reading. Once ready, follow these steps:

  1. Touch the black (negative) battery terminal with the black (negative) meter probe.
  2. Touch the red (positive) battery terminal to the red (positive) meter probe.
  3. Have someone turn on the headlights to give a small amount of energy to the battery
  4. Check the voltmeter reading.

When the battery is warmed up to about 80 degrees, a reading of 12.5 volts or higher means there’s a good charge. If you receive a reading of about 12.3 volts, the battery is about 75% charged. And a reading of 11.8 volts or lower means your battery has a 25% charge or less.
