Nissan History

From humble beginnings to worldwide success, Nissan history is filled with triumphs in the auto industry. This forward-thinking brand has always been on the forefront of technology, whether crafting the sporty 370Z or the eco-friendly LEAF. How did Nissan grow from the first Datsun to the global conglomerate that we know and love today? Let’s dive deeper into Nissan Motors history to find out!

By the Decade

While the very first Nissan Datsun arrived in 1914, the brand really took off in the 1930s in Japan. And nearly a century later, the popular Nissan brand shows no signs of slowing down!

  • 1930s: The 1930s introduced the Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. in Japan. This resulted in the production of the Nissan Datsun Type 15, Japan’s first mass-produced car. This early model featured a 4-cylinder engine that generated 15 hp!
  • 1950s: The 1950s saw a boom in production, including the first sales of the Datsun compact pickup in the United States. Other pioneering vehicles laid the foundation for the future of the lineup. For example, the Nissan Skyline coupe led to the Nissan GT-R, while the Datsun 1200 sedan became the prototype for the Nissan Altima.
  • 1960s: Nissan’s reputation became stronger and stronger, allowing the brand to take more risks. The Datsun Fairlady 1200 Roadster sports car was introduced to the market with a 48-hp engine, and the upgraded Datsun 320 Truck boosted power of the Nissan pickup. Additionally, the Nissan Patrol became the brand’s first SUV in the United States.
  • 1970s: The 1970s marked a milestone in Nissan Motors history. The brand sold its one-millionth Datsun in 1973, and Datsun became the top U.S. vehicle importer by 1975.
  • 1980s: Nissan found success with nearly 20 off-roading championship trophies, while the brand also introduced perennial favorites like the first Nissan Sentra. But it was the introduction of the INFINITI lineup in 1989 that really made the decade.
  • 2000s: The brand continued its international success, doubling both the available models and total sales within the decade. Plus, Nissan took technology to the next level with hybrid cars and advanced safety features.
