The 2017 Nissan Armada and the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder  are two SUVs built with the power you need. The Armada is a beast, yet it is luxurious and packed to the hilt with amenities you’ll love. The Pathfinder enjoys widespread popularity because it’s a compelling alternative to a minivan—roomy, feature-driven, and stylish. The latest models hit the mark, so really, it’s about what you’re looking for and what you need. So, let’s see how the Armada and Pathfinder compare in some important areas:

These SUVs are different in terms of size, space, and power, so as a result, they’re on different ends of the pricing spectrum. The base 2017 Nissan Armada begins at $44,400, and the highest end Platinum trim starts at $57,090. On the other hand, the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder’s pricing begins at $29,990, and the Platinum level Pathfinder starts at $41,870. You can get a tricked-out Pathfinder for less than the entry level Armada, so the question is, why? What else are you getting in the Armada?

Passenger and Cargo Space

Let’s start with passenger and cargo space. The Armada is large with a 121.8 inch wheelbase, a length of 208.9 inches, and a height of 75.8 inches. It offers seating for eight and 171.1 cubic feet of total interior volume. The Pathfinder is still a full-size SUV with its 114.2 inch wheelbase, 198.5-inch length, and 70.2-inch height—it’s substantially smaller than the Armada. It seats seven passengers and contains 157.8 cubic feet of passenger volume. What about room for stowing cargo? Well, the Armada specs don’t break out passenger versus cargo space, but the Pathfinder offers 16 cubic feet with the third-row seats up, and 79.8 cubic feet with the second and third-row seats folded flat. Both have ample space, so it’s just a question of how much you need.

Engine Power and Towing

The Armada owns the road with its powerful and efficient 5.6L direct injection gasoline V8 engine, which pumps out a best-in-class 390 hp. Combine that with the Armada’s 394 lb-ft of torque, and you get a maximum towing capacity of a whopping 8,500 pounds. The Pathfinder is rugged and powerful in its own right, with a solid 3.5L V6 engine that delivers 280 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque. The Pathfinder is a towing machine, too, with the ability to haul 6,000 pounds when properly equipped. As you might expect, the Pathfinder is the more fuel efficient vehicle, getting an EPA-estimated 27 mpg highway and 20 mpg city, compared to the Armada’s 19 mpg highway and 14 mpg city. That’s the tradeoff to the Armada’s brute strength.

Interior Comfort and Convenience

The freshly redesigned Armada is a sophisticated statement inside. The spacious, intuitively created cabin has luxurious options for premium, double-stitched leather seating, tasteful wood and metal accents, plus a mobile entertainment system. The Pathfinder has a bit more of an athletic, adventurous feel, but the same leather and wood trims are available options, too. The Pathfinder has an available tri-zone entertainment system, which gives everyone the option to do what they want. Bluetooth® handsfree smartphone integration, plug and play music via a USB connection, a jamming audio system, and available navigation are just a few of the many features that are available on both the Armada and the Pathfinder.

Safety Features

Nissan’s Intelligent Safety Shield philosophy is readily apparent in both the Armada and the Pathfinder. The guiding principle is that all safety system engineering and development is geared toward monitoring, warning, and intervening in hazardous situations. Both vehicles come with comprehensive airbag systems that protect all rows, zone body construction with front and rear crumple zones, and Vehicle Dynamic Control with Traction Control System. You can add an Around View Monitor on either vehicle, for a 360 degree bird’s-eye view of everything around you. Both offer models with Moving Object Detection, Blind Spot Warning, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. You can opt for Lane Departure Warning and Lane Departure Prevention, Predictive Forward Collision Warning and Forward Emergency Braking, and Backup Collision Prevention on the Armada. Forward Emergency Braking is available on the Pathfinder. So, the Armada has a wider range of safety options available.
